Molly McCann hails Conor McGregor’s ‘poetic’ advice in helping her prepare for New York bow… as ‘Meatball’ looks to cap off her breakout year with a win over Erin Blanchfield at UFC 281

  • McGregor told the women’s flyweight star to ‘always remember it’s just fighting’
  • McCann’s back-to-back stoppage wins have brought her into the UFC rankings
  • But she will need to defeat Erin Blanchfield at UFC 281 to continue title march

Molly McCann has revealed that she consulted UFC megastar Conor McGregor for advice on how to prepare for the biggest fight of her career amidst a newfound fame.

Despite debuting in the UFC in 2018, McCann’s status as one of the UK’s biggest combat sports stars was established thanks to her back-to-back UFC London wins against Luana Carolina and Hannah Goldy earlier this year.

Victory over Goldy in July catapulted the Scouse striker into the UFC’s rankings and McCann will take on her toughest test to date inside the Octagon when she faces 23-year-old prodigy Erin Blanchfield at UFC 281.

Struggling to juggle the various extracurricular commitments that come with combat sports stardom has hampered the career of many a promising fighter in the past, so McCann sought out advice from McGregor on how to keep herself entirely concentrated on the fight at hand.

‘I messaged him going, “How do you handle this? Because you can blow up and then you can blow up,” McCann told press at the UFC 281 media day.

‘I just couldn’t quite get my head around how some people are with you’. (McGregor) was just like, ‘When you’re in the gym, it’s just the gym. Don’t let no one else in. Keep everyone outside. Always remember it’s just fighting.

“You’re a cage warrior. That’s what we are. We’re Cage Warriors champions.” He said some mad things about, “Valentina is going to get a Mac spanking” and all these things.

‘It was so poetic, and it was so lovely. My partner, Ellis, printed it off and put it in a sign at MSG. It’s in my front room.

‘So every day, if I’m struggling or I’m feeling good, I don’t get ahead of myself, get a big fat head, and walk around with ego. It’s to stay grounded and realise that I’m just here to win. The rest of it, the external factors mean f*** all.’

A win at UFC 281 would bring McCann closer to a fight with women's flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko

A win over Blanchfield would bring McCann even closer to earning a shot at the reigning women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko.

Shevchenko has won nine-in-a-row in the 125lbs weight class since moving down from bantamweight in 2018 and has looked largely dominant throughout.

McCann will return to the Octagon to take on Blanchfield on the undercard of UFC 281 on Saturday November 12th at Madison Square Garden.
