My Makeup Routine – A Foodie Stays Fit

I’ve always been someone who likes to test and try lots of different makeup. I’m more committed to my skincare routine (although I do like to try new products from TRUSTED recommendations), but my makeup routine changes whenever I get a new product I love. (Or, whenever something I love gets discontinued, which has happened a lot in the last year!). I switch up my makeup routine almost daily, since I’ve become somewhat of a makeup junkie over the years.

Recently, I’ve discovered some brands that I’d never tried and have become hooked on some fun items. I wanted a dedicated place to update my makeup routine whenever something changes, so that’s what this post will be. I’ll make sure to keep it as updated as possible since I do change things up pretty frequently. I love playing with makeup! I’m also picky about makeup since I still want to feel like myself and nothing too heavy or cakey. (There’s a reason I did my own wedding makeup!!)

So, here’s my current makeup routine, including all the current favorites. See how I apply my makeup in this post and a super quick Instagram reel with a few other products here.

My Makeup Routine

1. Primer

After I use SPF to finish my skincare routine, I use the Beautycounter Glow First Priming Serum or this Jouer Anti-Aging Moisture Primer. I’ve never liked primers until I found these two. Most primers feel like glue on my face and like my skin can’t breathe. But both of these contain skincare ingredients to improve skin overtime, while also making your makeup last longer and look SO smooth and glowy. I always let my primer dry completely before starting my foundation. I think the Beautycounter priming serum makes my skin look GREAT right after applying it, while the Jouer Primer helps my makeup last better. So, which one you get depends on your skin/makeup goals.

I also LOVE this Shape Tape Glow Wand for eye primer – it looks great on its own and also helps eyeshadow apply more easily. It can be used all over but I haven’t tried that yet.

2. Concealer

I have two shades of concealer – one that’s a little lighter than my skin tone for brightening under eyes and one that’s my skin tone for covering blemishes and redness. For blemishes, apply the concealer and let it dry for a minute or so, and then blend it out. That will help cover it without emphasizing the spot more.

Tarte Shape Tape Ultra Creamy Concealer – I like the creamy formula since my skin is a little dry and the traditional Shape Tape concealer tends to settle in lines.

Tarte Creaseless Concealer  – If you really struggle with dark circles or redness around the nose, this one is fantastic. It also does NOT settle in lines, making it great for aging skin.

Beautycounter Concealer – This is the most lightweight and easiest to blend.

3. Foundation

After concealer, I apply foundation. Depending on my mood, what I’m getting ready for, and what my skin needs, I’ll choose between these:

Beautycounter Skin Twin Foundation – I’ve used this for years. It has medium coverage, but with a semi-matte finish.

Ilia True Skin Serum Foundation – I absolutely LOVE this foundation. It’s medium coverage, with a natural skin-like finish. It’s also very hydrating.

Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint with SPF – This is like a tinted moisturizer, but I find it provides more slightly coverage than Beautycounter Dew Skin (which I used for years) and it’s MUCH more hydrating. (If you have oily skin, you’d likely prefer Dew Skin. But since I have dry skin, this is my pick. It DOES have a weird smell though (almost like dog food), but it dissipates quickly.

Chantecaille Future Skin Gel Foundation – This is my favorite medium coverage foundation for the warmer months. It has about the same amount of coverage as the Ilia foundation, but this one isn’t quite as hydrating so it’s great for the summer when my skin isn’t as dry.

4. Eyeshadow

Eyeshadow is truly what I switch up the most (well, other than lip color). Depending on my outfit, I’ll switch up the colors. I prefer a powder eyeshadow to a cream shadow, since I find it’s harder to apply a cream shadow. If I’m doing more than one shade on my eyes, I do my eyeshadow BEFORE my concealer so I can clean up any fall out before applying concealer under my eyes.

Tarte tartelette™ in bloom Amazonian clay palette – This palette has the prettiest everyday shades. I hate when an eyeshadow palette has a ton of random colors I don’t use! If you were to only have one eyeshadow palette, this is my pick.

Chantecaille Eyeshadow in Copper – This isn’t really a cream shadow, even though it comes in a little pot. I use my finger to apply and blend to my brow bone. It’s more powder than cream, and SO easy to apply.

Thrive Cosmetics Brilliant Eye Brightener – This is a cream formula, but comes in pencil form so it’s very easy to apply. It’s VERY sheer so you have to build if you want more than a flush of color.

Tarte Quick Stick Shadow and Liner – I love that Tarte makes so many double-ended products! I love both sides of this shadow-liner combo.

5. Eyeliner

I like to do a small amount of eyeliner everyday just on the outer half of my upper and lower lash line (as close to the water line as possible and sometimes right on it). I feel like it opens my eyes up and makes me look more put-together. Then, I soften the line with a liner brush for a softer look (unless it’s liquid and then I let it dry in a sharper line!).

Chantecaille pencil liner – I have this in Amethyst (it pairs BEAUTIFULLY with the copper eye shadow with my green/hazel eyes).

Ilia Clean Line Liquid Eyeliner – This takes some practice since the brush is a little longer than previous liquid liners I’ve owned but the color doesn’t BUDGE.

Tarte quick Stick™ Double-Ended Gel Liner -This black liner is an intense black that also smudges out easily for a more natural look. I love the brightening end that I use on my lower lash line to make me look more awake!

6. Eyelash Curler & Primer

This eyelash curler never pinches and creates a long lasting curl. I’ve had it for over a decade!

I’ve been using the Tarte Opening Act Lash Primer for a few years and I am OBSESSED with it. I’m hot and cold with mascaras because I’m always looking for the best one, but I’m super loyal to this primer. I coat my lashes in this and then add mascara about 1 minute later after the primer sets just a bit but doesn’t completely dry. This helps prevent clumps with mascara and helps thicken and lengthen. As soon as I started using an eyelash primer I was SHOCKED by how much longer and fuller my lashes looked. It’s a game-changer if you aren’t using it yet.

7. Mascara

I try every mascara I come into contact with, and I am VERY picky. I typically only wear tubing mascara since it’s not oil-based. Traditional oil based mascaras smudge on me, no matter what I do. I do have a few that aren’t tubing, and I’ll save them for events when I’m not wearing the mascara the entire day, since it’s less likely to smudge.

Tarte Tartelette Tubing Mascara – If you get JUST one, this is my pick. It never smudges, but builds beautifully for a bold lash line. I’d give this an A-. I’ve never found an A+ mascara but maybe someday. It’s a tubing mascara, which is how it doesn’t smudge, and tubing mascaras are great for length, but not necessarily volume.

Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes™ 4-in-1 mascara – This gives beautiful volume without ever clumping. The only downside is that it smudges just a tad, like all oil soluble mascara, but it’s significantly better than other traditional mascaras I’ve never over the years. (I actually ran in the Waterproof version for the Boston Marathon and that doesn’t BUDGE.)

Unlocked Instant Extensions Lengthening Mascara – This is a close second to the Tarte Tubing Mascara. This one thickens a bit better than the Tarte one, but I also think it’s more prone to clumping.

8. Brow Gel and Pencil

I always say that my desert island makeup pick would be brow gel. I fill my brows in no matter what, even if I’m not doing a full face of makeup. And I even filled them in for the Boston Marathon!

Chantecaille Waterproof Eyebrow Pencil Definer – This is a one-step pencil! I use it to define them and fill them in a bit.

Tarte Busy Gal BROWS Tinted Brow Gel – Best Brow Gel EVER, the end. I love the tiny spool, and the formula isn’t too dry or too wet and looks so natural.

Tarte Sketch & Set™ Brow Pencil & Tinted Gel – If I’m spending more time on my brows, I use this pencil to fill them in (I have to be a little more precise with this one than the Chantecaille pencil). The shade of the brow gel on this one leans a little red on me so I don’t use it.

9. Blush

Tarte Precious Gems Amazonian Clay Cheek Palette – I haven’t used a powder blush in YEARS (not  since Beautycounter had one) and I’m honestly shocked by how much I like this. It’s VERY pigmented but blends easily and looks so natural. All the shades in this palette are beautiful. If you like powder blush, you’ll love this palette.

Tarte Maneater Blush & Glow™ Cheek Plump – This is such a fun product, especially for aging skin since it has a little plumping sensation. I apply a few dabs of it, let it dry and then blend it out with my fingers or blush. It’s not quite as easy as powder or the cheeky cream blush, but it does give a beautiful flush and has long staying power.

Beautycounter Cheeky Cream Blush – This lasts FOREVER and it looks SO natural. They have lots of shades, but like lychee, rosebud, paloma and chai the best, and I rotate among depending on my outfit. I love love love love this blush but it’s much more sheer so it’s great for a super quick makeup look.

10. Bronzer

I don’t use bronzer everyday, but I always feel better when I do, particularly around my hairline and under my cheek bones.

ILIA NightLite Bronzer Powder – this is VERY matte and VERY pigmented and it’s easy to go overboard so tread lightly!

Chantecaille Real Bronze – This has a little shimmer and I tend to grab this one more often than Ilia since it’s more forgiving. I also love the gel-powder formula. But, if you definitely want a matte bronzer, get the ilia one.

Westman Atelier Super Loaded Tinted Cream Highlighter – this is a very creamy formula and I use my fingers to apply it. I don’t think of it as true bronzer but more like a product to help tan certain areas. It’s very forgiving and blends super easily. I use the shade “natural finish”.

11. Highlighter

Westman Atelier Lit Up Glow Highlighter Stick – this is so beautiful and creamy and natural looking!

Tarte Maracuja Juicy Glow  – If you struggle with overdoing it with with highlighter, this stick is for you! It’s fool-proof! I apply it on my brow bone, cheek bone and just above my lip bow.

12. Pressed Powder

Tarte Shape Tape™ Glow Powder – I use this all over my face and LOVE how natural it looks. It gives me a natural glow without true shine. It also helps set my makeup.

Chantecaille Blur Powder  – Most powders are FAR too drying on my aging skin and are uncomfortable on my skin, but this one somehow makes my skin feel more hydrated and sets my makeup.

13. Lips

I LOVE lipstick and lipgloss. I have tons of different colors and brands, but my current favorites are:

Tarte maracuja juicy lip products (yes all of the different varieties!) – If you prefer a traditional lipstick, you’ll love the Lipstick Creme. If you like gloss but don’t like the messiness of the gloss, you’ll love the plumping or the juicy lip!

Tarte H20 Balm Lip – this almost gives me the lool of filling my lips in with liner but with a little shine. I love the texture of this and how full it makes my lips look.

Tarte Lip Oil – I’d never heard of a lip oil, but I love this! This is HIGH shine. I hate how my hair gets stuck in it, but if my hair is back, this is a great option. I love this for date night.

Image Ormedic Lip Plumper – this makes my lips looks AMAZING. It’s very hydrating – I have both the clear and the pink shade (which is very sheer).

Beautycounter Sheer Genius lipstick in Lily – this is the most forgiving color – I don’t even need a mirror to apply! It applies like a balm but looks like a lipstick and is very hydrating.

Beautycounter Jellies – these are cute and fun and hydrating. Think of them like a flavored gloss. I think they were designed for teens, but I don’t care, I love them.

Charlotte Tilbury Pillowtalk – this is matte, but is very hydrating and the PERFECT nude color. I wear it for all my family photos and blog photo shoots!

In the below photo, which is my makeup before family photos in November, I’m wearing the following:

And here’s a photo with a more natural, everyday makeup look.
