‘It’s POPPED!’: Ben Chilwell reveals injury heartbreak to Mason Mount ahead of the World Cup

‘It’s POPPED!’ Cameras capture what Ben Chilwell told a shocked Mason Mount as he hobbled off during Chelsea’s win over Dinamo Zagreb… with the England full-back’s World Cup dream in tatters

Chelsea full-back Ben Chilwell told team-mate Mason Mount his hamstring ‘popped’ during his side’s 2-1 Champions League win against Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday, leaving his chances of making the World Cup in ruins.

With the clock ticking down and Chelsea on course for their fourth group stage win, Chilwell went down in stoppage time clutching the back of his left leg.

After receiving treatment, Chilwell had to be helped from the pitch and passed by Mount who asked him what had happened. BT Sport cameras appeared to pick up Chilwell’s response as he mouthed ‘it’s popped’, leaving Mount visibly upset for the defender.

Chilwell’s words indicated that he knew he’d picked up a serious injury, and he was on crutches after full-time. Blues boss Graham Potter admitted afterwards he was not optimistic about the 25-year-old making a speedy recovery, with the World Cup less than three weeks away.

When asked if Chilwell is now a doubt for Qatar, Potter told reporters: ‘I think you would have to say so, yeah.

‘Obviously I don’t want to add any more than that but when a player pulls up like he did and he felt it so it’s never positive.

‘I spoke to him briefly. He felt something as he was setting off so he’s disappointed and he’s upset. It’s not positive at the moment.

‘It’s a blow to see him pull up like that. It’s not a great sight so fingers crossed when we get it scanned it isn’t as bad.’

If Chilwell does miss the World Cup, it would be a devastating blow for him after he experienced a difficult Euros last year with the Three Lions.

He entered the tournament off the back of winning the Champions League with Chelsea, but found himself below Luke Shaw and Kieran Trippier in Gareth Southgate’s pecking order.

The left-back was then ruled out of England’s final group game against Czech Republic after coming into close contact with Scotland’s Billy Gilmour shortly before the midfielder tested positive for Covid-19.

Chilwell joined up with his team-mates again later in the tournament, but failed to play a single minute in England’s seven matches, and was left out of the matchday squad for the final against Italy.

He also endured an injury-hit 2021-22 campaign after rupturing his ACL last November which kept him out of action for five months.

England begin their World Cup by playing Iran on November 21, and it now looks very unlikely that Chilwell will be ready for that game after his latest injury setback.
