Erik ten Hag ‘was fooled by Man United’s players’ in pre-season and the squad are ‘psychologically broken’, blasts Patrice Evra… with Frenchman claiming they need a ‘MIRACLE’ against Liverpool
- Patrice Evra has blasted the current Man United players for their performances
- The Frenchman said Erik ten Hag has been fooled by the players so far this term
- Evra declared that United need a miracle against Liverpool on Monday evening
Erik ten Hag was fooled by the Manchester United players performances during pre-season Patrice Evra has claimed.
Having enjoyed a stellar pre-season in which they beat Premier League opposition and only lost one game, United have endured an abysmal start to their league campaign losing twice including an inexplicable 4-0 loss away at Brentford.
Speaking to Betfair ahead of Monday night’s clash between United and Liverpool, Evra said that it was time for the players to take some responsibility but that Ten Hag had been ‘fooled’ by the players.
Patrice Evra has claimed that Erik ten Hag was fooled by the Manchester United squad
He said: ‘There’s no confidence and we have got carried away with the pre-season.
‘When the league starts things are totally different, sometimes I even prefer to have a bad pre-season, then it means you have to work hard, your legs are heavy. When you’re too sharp in pre-season and you look good, that means you’re not working hard enough.
‘I always have so much respect for the players but now I think it’s time for them to take some responsibility.’
The former defender who won almost everything there was to win at United described the current squad as ‘psychologically broken’
United beat Liverpool in the opening match of their summer programme before travelling onto Australia were they comprehensively overcame Crystal Palace before drawing with Aston Villa.
Ten Hag was praised throughout the early to mid summer for how he had got a front three of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho ticking and working intelligently together.
Unfortunately for the Dutchman a combination of poor performances and injuries has conspired to ensure that United have not looked anywhere near the level their pre-season performances perhaps suggested they would be.
Ten Hag has a tough job on his hands already reversing the early season results and performances
Evra also found some criticism for the manager, saying he should have been more aware of the squad’s shortcomings and allowed those players who are ‘psychologically broken’ to depart.
‘I also blame Ten Hag, he’s been fooled by all those players, the same way other managers have been fooled by them. In pre-season they looked so good, and he would have been excited to make them even better, but no.
‘Psychologically they are broken. Every time they face a difficult challenge, those players won’t overcome it. It’s been like this for years and it’s the same thing, it doesn’t even hurt anymore, it’s deja vu.
‘People aren’t blaming Ten Hag, but I’m sorry, he came in like, “I can do it”, and he can’t until those players leave. We have to rebuild everything and with those players we won’t go anywhere.’
United’s players almost went unbeaten during pre-season but have lost their opening two league fixtures
Meanwhile, United host Liverpool on Monday night in a battle between two sides both without a win so far this campaign.
Evra, influenced by United’s less than stellar performances this month and last season’s 9-0 aggregate loss to their great rivals, suggested United need a ‘miracle’ to beat Liverpool.
‘We are touching rock bottom right now, against Liverpool we will need a miracle,’ he said. ‘The only positive thing is Liverpool haven’t won a game yet, so they also don’t look ready yet. So, maybe this match can boost the players’ confidence.
‘If Liverpool are arrogant, we can beat them. But if Liverpool come into this game motivated after they haven’t won any of their first two then they will destroy us.’
