Wolves have held positive talks with Sporting Lisbon over a potential club record £38million deal for Matheus Nunes.

The midfielder rejected a move to West Ham last week as he has been holding out for a Champions League club but is being persuaded by Bruno Lage that Wolves can be a stepping stone.

Wolves are offering further add-ons and hope to conclude a deal this week.

Liverpool and Manchester City were also monitoring Nunes, who has made a major impact for Sporting. 

Wolves current record fee is £35million, which they paid to sign Fabio Silva from Porto in 2020. 

Nunes joined Sporting from Estoril in 2019 and has proceeded to make over 100 appearances for the club.

The 23-year-old has also broken into the Portugal squad and has been capped by his country on eight occasions. 

So far in this transfer window Wolves have signed Goncalo Guedes and Nathan Collins, while Hwang Hee-chan made his loan move permanent.

They have however, seen defender Conor Coady join Everton on loan. 

Wolves have taken one point from their two Premier League games so far this season – they lost to Leeds before drawing with Fulham.
